A day in the life of a strawberry picker

So the idea is to pick the berries that have turned red and put them in the punnet. Easy.

I might just sample one before I start.

These are really good.

super sweet.

What do you mean I’m supposed to be filling the punnet?

Oh, you mean like that. ┬áIt’s a good thing Mum and Papi got the hang of this picking thing.

We were at the Father’s Day Weekend Berry Jam at Kruger’s Farm.

Much more efficient to bypass the punnet and go straight to the puku, Ana. Well done!

Our strawberry plants are looking pretty sad after a -3.5 degrees celcius start this morning – and that was when we woke up after a sleep-in until 8am! It is now after lunch (persimmons – yum) and it is fine and sunny but just 10 degrees.

Our strawberry plant at home hasn’t grown at all so we’re not doing very well on that front either. Our raspberry bush and one of our blueberry bushes on the other hand are growing nicely. We won’t have any berries from them this year though. Our cherry tree is another story – covered in cherries. Some of them are red so almost time to eat them!

Ana, I seem to remember having a very similar strawberry picking method when I was little. The man at the weighing station threatened to weigh me as well as the punnets!
