Many of the limestone buildings and ornate facades were built by convicts sent from Britain in 1850 to support the local population.

The original Fremantle jail, The Round House, was built in 1830 but wasn't big enough to house the migrating convicts who had to build their own prison in 1850 which became one of the British Empires most notorious prisons and is now visited by tourists.

The original Fremantle jail, The Round House (up on the hill) was built in 1830 but wasn’t big enough to house the migrating convicts who had to build a new jail for themselves in the mid 1800s.  Both can be toured today (although we just looked from the outside).

Many of the oranate buildings house a budding artist scene and great coffee shops.

Many of the oranate buildings house a budding artist scene although we didn’t go to any galleries either.

Great coffee shops are also in abundance and I had to make the most of those Babycinos since we don't have them back home.

We did however, stop in on one of the many great coffee shops which was my idea as I’ve become particularly fond of Babycinos on this trip.

You look so much at home in the café scene, Ana. In a few years time you’ll find the exhibitions of Aborigine art at Fremantle fascinating (my genes must have come through, for sure!) and you can come and visit and we’ll see how we manage painting some together.

Freo jail especially at night is well worth a tour when the kids are a bit older.

A woman after my own heart Ana. We love Freo and the coffee shops. And the buildings. They have a big music scene too.

Hi Ana, I also vote for the Freo coffee shops rather than the Round House.
