Mum, Papi, Grandpa John and Jennifer went to NASA before Christmas on a VIP tour.
They got to do VIP things such as go to the big pool the contains the International Space Station replica. The astronauts train in their suits in the pool because apart from the drag of the water it’s the closest they can get to simulate the difficulties of working on the Space Station.
They also got a tour of the warehouse that holds the internal replica of the space station, also for training purposes, and the robotics department where this robot asto-car was hanging out.
The Mission Control Building was a highlight. This is where the team are currently controlling the ISS. That’s the Flight Director (the big boss) and the CapCom (communications) in the foreground.
Up a few floors was the old Mission Control. It was incredible to think that they flew astronauts to the moon with this technology. No computers just display screens, dial phones and hand written notes.
Today was our turn to check out the rockets and NASA exhibits.
We learnt about the different gravitational pulls on various planets. (It’s hard to lift that weight on Earth, much easier on Jupiter)
Checked out the Mars Rover.
Papi and Grandpa John went on flight simulators (Papi has bruises on his shoulders from spinning upside down)
We did a spot of flying too.
And docking our space ship into the International Space Station.
We checked out the space suits and how they’ve changed through the years.
The very best bit was going on a rocket ride. We went up into space to carry the Hubble telescope into orbit and then safely back down to Earth, getting back to the ground just in time for lunch.
